Sometimes
the wisdom of other religious leaders is to be recommended. It gives us a fresh
perspective. It challenges the limitations of our religious world. It enables
us to grow in our appreciation of other religions. It makes us ask questions of
ourselves and our world. It may even make us smile. Here’s some Zen wisdom. It comes from a well-known
Zen monk Gasan who was instructing his students one day:
‘Those
who speak against killing and who desire to spare the lives of all conscious
beings are right. It is good to protect even animals and insects. But what
about those who kill time? What about those who are destroying wealth? We
should not overlook them. Furthermore, what of the one who preaches without
enlightenment? He is killing Buddhism.’
